“DAYENU… It would have been enough for us,” is a song of Thanksgiving sung joyously during the Seder service of Passover. The verses of the song tell how G-d took the Israelites from Egypt and slavery to the land of Israel and freedom.
Symbols taken directly from the verses of the song are the parting of the waters of the Red Sea, the Torah and manna. The palm tree on the initial letter, daled, signifies the Lord’s giving of sustenance and shelter to the Israelites.
G-d led the Israelites through the desert with “a column of smoke by day and a pillar of fire by night”. I have shown the smoke and fire transecting the daled as symbols of the desert journey.
The letter shin on the lower left side of the Torah stands for Shaddai (our G-d).
