The Kabbalah of the Alef Bet
Hebrew the only language whose letters communicate meaning independent of the words they form. Countless writings - from the Kabalistic formulas found in Sefer Yetzirah to the meaning of each letter’s name and form expounded on in the Talmud - make it clear that Hebrew is studied not only as a language of words, but as a science of letters. The letters are descriptions of energies that can be understood when we study the symbolism of their shapes, names, and their numerical values.
Just as a carpenter employs tools to build a home, so G d utilized the twenty-two letters of the Hebrew Alphabet, the Alef-Bet, to form heaven and earth. These letters are the metaphorical wood, stone, nails, corner posts and crossbeams of our earthly and spiritual existence.
When the Creator first formed the letters, He created them as hidden light which could not be comprehended. He then lowered them, one step at a time, until they were embodied in the form of the heavenly letters, which are spiritual lights. And when He gave them to mankind, He further embodied them in a physical form, just like the soul within which cannot dwell in this world without a physical body to carry it.
